Boot Ranch
A Vacation Home on the Boot Ranch Golf Course
This vacation home sits on the Boot Ranch golf course in Fredericksburg. White walls run through every room of it, and the color and pattern set against them are what tell the story of the design.
That approach lets each room take its own turn without the house losing the thread. An antelope print rug in the living room answers the wildlife in the country outside. Schumacher's Citrus Garden covers the dining chairs. A zebra hide grounds the guest bedroom. None of it is quiet, and all of it belongs to the same house.
There is a second residence on the property, an apartment designed for the owners' parents, and it carries the same style and the same colors straight through. Details matter, and this house is built out of them.
A Living Room That Answers the Land Outside
The rug is an antelope print, chosen to talk back to the wildlife in the country around Fredericksburg. It sets the tone for a room that is otherwise held steady by white walls and a wall of windows onto the course.
The ottomans are locally made and upholstered in No. 9 Thompson. Around them sit a blue sofa, green velvet and botanical pillows, a round rattan coffee table and a blue and white garden stool, pulled in wherever another seat is wanted.
Acrylic and Brass Against Reclaimed Beams
The counter stools are modern, acrylic and brass, and they are what keeps the kitchen from reading as purely rustic. The reclaimed wood beams overhead do the opposite, carrying the weathered, timeless note.
Between the two sits a plain white kitchen: flat panel cabinetry, a pale zellige backsplash, a black lantern over the island and a deep blue range that gives the room its one piece of color.
Citrus Garden, Laminated for Real Use
The dining chair cushions are custom, upholstered in Schumacher's Citrus Garden. It is one of the most recognizable prints the house makes, and on the dining table of a vacation home it had to survive being used.
So the fabric was laminated. The pattern stays exactly as it is and the surface wipes clean. Cane backs and a white pedestal table keep the rest of the setting light, with the course filling the windows behind.
Hotel Calm, in Layers of Blue
White runs through the walls, the drapery, the roman shades, the duvet and the quilt, and that is what gives the master bedroom its hotel quality. The color arrives in blue, in several patterns at once, so the calm still has something to look at.
A custom painted dresser from Modern History stands against the window wall. Underfoot is a rug hand knotted from 100% New Zealand wool. A monogrammed lumbar pillow on the bed is the one piece in the room that belongs to this family and to no one else.
A Soaking Tub for the End of the Day
The tub stands free at the end of the master bathroom, which is the whole point of it. It is there for the end of a day spent out on the course.
White marble herringbone runs across the floor. A skirted ottoman sits in the middle of the room carrying a tray, and the vanity wall keeps its towels and trays out on open shelves rather than behind doors.
A Guest Room That Does Not Take Itself Seriously
White walls, a carved antique headboard and a modern painting of pandas. The mix is deliberate, and every piece in it is good enough to carry the joke.
A zebra hide on the floor gives the room its rustic Fredericksburg note, and an antique bamboo chair carries the same idea in a different direction.
A Landing Spot for Bags, Hats and Clubs
The hall tree is hooks above a bench, and it does the work every entry in a vacation house has to do. Hats go up, bags go down, and the hallway stays a beautiful place to land rather than a pile.
The golf club holder is blue and white ceramic, which is a better answer than a rack in the garage. Shiplap, folk print pillows and a herringbone throw finish it.
Always a Good Idea for Wallpaper in a Powder Bath
A powder room is small, and that is exactly what makes it the right place to commit to a pattern. This one is papered in Les Touches, in blue.
Everything else stays out of its way. A walnut vanity, a white counter, matte black fittings and a black framed mirror hung between two brass and black sconces.
An Apartment on the Property, for the Owners' Parents
The apartment keeps the same style and the same colors flowing as the main house, so arriving there never feels like leaving it.
The kitchen and bathroom cabinets are painted Sporty Blue, SW 6522, with brass hardware set against them. A Visual Comfort chandelier hangs over the dining table. The antique dining chairs were reupholstered in a green block print, which is the contrast the ultra modern white bistro table needed, and the modern, colorful art on the walls picks up the green of the course outside.
